Answers to the questions we are asked most often.
What is an assistance dog?
An assistance dog is individually trained to perform specific tasks that mitigate the effects of a person's disability. This is different from an emotional support animal or a pet: the defining feature is trained, task-based work.
Does Lisbon Assistance Dogs sell certificates or register any dog?
No. We do not sell certifications or register dogs we have not trained and assessed. A record from us reflects a documented training program and a public-access assessment carried out by our team.
How do I verify a record I have been shown?
Use the license / record number printed on the certificate. Enter it in our Search page, or go directly to lisbonassistancedogs.com/dogs/ followed by the record number. The certificate's QR code links to the same verification page.
Can my own dog be trained as an assistance dog?
Privately owned dogs can sometimes be assessed and trained further if they meet our requirements, including a minimum training period. Please contact us to discuss whether your dog and situation are suitable.
Does a record grant legal public-access rights?
No. Public access is governed by local and national legislation, which varies by country. A record documents training and assessment; it does not override the law. Handlers are responsible for understanding the rules that apply to them.
How much does an assistance dog cost?
Costs vary widely with the type of dog, the length of training, and the support required. Please contact us for current information about programs and any funding or waiting-list considerations.
